Around 40% of teenagers say they have cut back on their time on social media, according to a report published Monday by the Pew Research Center. Nearly the same proportion of teens acknowledge that they spend “too much” time on their smartphones (38%) and social media (27%). However, some revealed mixed emotions, as 44% of the teens surveyed said they feel anxious when they’re without their phones. Many parents also say they are keeping tabs on their teens’ smartphone and social media use, with half of parent respondents reporting they’ve looked through their children’s phones, particularly parents of younger teens. (And in most cases, their children seem to know it: 43% of teen respondents said their parents had looked through their phones.)

Nike also remains the preferred apparel brand, according to the semiannual Piper Sandler survey. Twice a year, Piper Sandler surveys teenagers, now part of Gen Z, on brand preferences. And among upper-income female teenagers, Lululemon earned the top spot, being the preferred brand of 14% of respondents. Among upper-income males surveyed, Nike was the top clothing brand of 50% of those surveyed. For the most recent edition of the survey, Piper Sandler polled teenagers in 47 states.
There are a lot of reasons why you might want to delete a popular app from their phone — and you're far from alone. Popular social media apps Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat garnered the most internet searches from people looking to delete those apps over a recent six-month period, according to an analysis of search trends from cybersecurity website VPNOverview. During that period, there were more than 900,000 searches for how to "delete" or "deactivate" Instagram, more than any of the country's 30 most popular apps by downloads, VPNOverview said in its February report. And in recent years, polls have shown growing distrust of popular social media platforms over issues like disinformation, cyberbullying, phishing scams, privacy concerns and data mining. And, while the majority of teens today are willing to take breaks from social media, they're also mostly split on whether they could give up social media altogether.
Ulta is still the most popular beauty store for all female teens, according to a semiannual survey. Out of the 6,670 female teens surveyed, 29% of upper-income female teens and 40% of average-income female teens chose Bath & Body Works as their favorite source for fragrances. Upper-income female teens are spending slightly less for perfumes at $62 every year compared with $67 a year spent on perfumes by average-income female teens. While female teens with wealthier incomes spent $93 last fall on hair care products, female teens with average income spent $91 a year. However, Olaplex was the most popular hair care brand for 14% of upper-income female teens, and the second most popular for female teens with average incomes.
Gen Z may be done with the thumbs-up emoji, but teenagers across America still love Chick-fil-A. The popular chicken sandwich restaurant is a favorite among the nation's teens, according to Piper Sandler's semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens survey, with 15% of respondents listing it as their No. The survey, which was conducted between Aug. 12 and Sept. 23, got responses from 14,500 teens across 47 states, with an average age of 15.8. Chick-fil-A's 15% mark put it firmly in the lead among all restaurant chains. The next closest was Starbucks, which was listed as the favorite by 12% of teens.
